Lyon

Lyon County is a county in east-central Kansas with a rich history and diverse attractions, from nature preserves to the preserved home of a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist. It was once called Breckinridge County but was renamed after General Nathaniel Lyon, who was killed in the Civil War. Lyon County is home to the cities of Emporia, Allen, and Hartford, and has over 32,000 residents.

• David Traylor Zoo. David Traylor Zoo in Emporia is a free zoo with over 80 animals from across the globe, including red foxes, bison, and deer. The Zoo hosts a variety of educational programs for children, including an “Edventure” Day and a week-long Zoo Camp where kids can immerse themselves in nature, learn about wildlife preservation, and more.

• William Allen White House. The former home of famous journalist, author, and politician William Allen White, this historic landmark is now a museum that showcases his life and work. The Museum is open from Wednesday to Sunday for $5 admission for adults and $3 for students.

• Symphony in the Flint Hills. Symphony in the Flint Hills is a non-profit organization that celebrates the region’s unique culture and landscape through music, art, and education. The organization hosts an annual concert drawing visitors from all over the region to celebrate the Flint Hills tallgrass prairie.
